<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Holidays are expendable when you work in animal rescue. The calls and texts and emails requesting help for needy animals don't slow down because there's a turkey in the oven or Santa is coming down the chimney.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Today was no exception.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The buzzing of my phone alerting me to a text or an email or a voicemail went on steadily all day. It was all in a days' work - all needed to be dealt with but nothing was an emergency. That is until 2:45pm when I received a call about Jelly, one of our puppies who had become ill and needed to be transferred to get emergency medical care as soon as possible.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Jelly

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
I sprang into action - first thing was to pull the roast out of the oven and shove it in the refrigerator to be cooked later. I quickly got dressed in my outdoor gear, grabbed the necessary supplies and started up the van. Current weather was 22 degrees, snowing and windy. The newscaster reported that the roads were bad and if we didn't need to go out, we should stay home.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My driveway is on a major highway and in order to get over the cliff of ice that has built up at the end of the driveway, I need to get a running start. I prepared myself for the ride, checked that the road was clear and gunned it, and just as quickly, hit the brakes as a car without its lights on came up over the hill. When the coast was clear and I attempted to move, I quickly realized that I was hung up on the ice and was going nowhere.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I felt the panic start to set in as the wheels of the van spun and spun - Jelly needed to be picked up by 4:00pm and here I was, stuck in my driveway. I took a deep breath and trudged to the garage to get out the shovel and the cat litter. Twenty minutes and many cuss words later, I was more stuck than ever. My heart was in my throat with worry about Jelly. I took another deep breath and started making calls.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And then it was over. Fifteen minutes after I started making calls, everything was OK. A volunteer was happy to make the trip to pick up Jelly and get her to the foster where she would get the medical help she needed. My neighbor came over with his 4-wheel drive truck and pushed me out of the ice.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I came back inside and was overwhelmed with gratitude for the people in my life. The tears started flowing as I thought about all the wonderful, generous, selfless people I have met since I began this crazy animal rescue life more than 10 years ago.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">From today - Terri, who dropped everything on New Year's Eve to make the drive in crappy weather to get Jelly to safety. Jean, the rescuer who did not hesitate for one second when I asked her if she could take a sick puppy on New Year's Eve. Philip, who listened to my panicked voice and offered his always calm and soothing suggestions. And Ed, my neighbor, who left his warm house on a very cold afternoon without a second's thought to help me get the van unstuck.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And beyond today, I am so very grateful for the wonderful people and partnerships that make Leech Lake Legacy the wonderful, caring organization it has become. In no particular order,

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Board - Arlys, Craig, Dani, Philip and Terri - who work tirelessly on behalf of the needy animals on Leech Lake Reservation. I am proud to call you my friends.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Volunteers - There are many and they are fantastic, loyal, passionate, generous, kind and give of themselves every day to make better lives for Reservation animals. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am grateful to you every single day.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A special Shout Out to Tom and Nancy O'Sullivan. They live near Leech Lake Reservation and are always available on a moment's notice to pick up an injured or sick animal, to deliver food to hungry animals, to drop off a house to keep a dog from freezing, or one of the thousand other requests we make of them. They are incredible humans and love all animals with an amazing passion.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Karen Good who has been an incredible mentor and friend since my life in animal rescue began more than 10 years ago. Karen is a passionate, tireless voice for needy animals on Red Lake Reservation.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">My Friends and Family - thank you for always being there to support me during the hard times and tough decisions, and to laugh and cheer with me on our successes. You keep me going on those difficult animal rescue days when I want to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Donors and Supporters who make sure we have the resources and tools to help as many animals as possible. Thank you for your generosity and your trust.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Supporters and Friends on Leech Lake Reservation who welcomed us almost eight years ago and who continue to provide us with necessary resources to help needy dogs and cats on Leech Lake Reservation.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A special Shout Out to Rory Haaland - he has been our contact and friend since we started working with the Tribal Police almost eight years ago. He is the tireless caretaker and voice for our four-legged friends on Leech Lake Reservation.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our Rescue Partners - Leech Lake Legacy does not adopt out animals. We do not have a facility to house animals. But our Rescue Partners do. Thank you to our Rescue Partners for rising to the occasion when we have animals that need a place to call home. We could not help as many animals as we do without all of you.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">And I want to save my last thank you for the Animal Humane Society. They have been a generous, stable, loyal, wonderful partner since Leech Lake Legacy came into being almost eight years ago. We could not ask for a better partner.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In 2018 alone, AHS took in more than 1,200 dogs and cats from Leech Lake and Red Lake Reservations. We work closely with AHS to make sure that all of the animals we send them are able to be placed up for adoption. In the cases where our animals are not placeable, AHS works with us to help us find a suitable partner to take the dog or cat.
I have driven hundreds of
transports, carrying thousands of dogs, cats, bunnies and other critters from
northern Minnesota. Never, in my six plus years of transporting animals, has a
dog escaped from their kennel during transport.

Never, that is, until
this past Saturday.

When I met Nancy in
Motley for our weekly swap of clean kennels for dogs and cats, we noticed that
the gate on Zoilo's crate was bent inward. Being the responsible transporters
that we are, we reinforced the front of Zoilo's kennel with two bungee cords
and felt quite certain there would no issues.

I was about 45 minutes
from my first stop in Buffalo when I heard an odd noise from the back of the
van. I glanced in the rearview mirror and to my surprise; I could see Zoilo's
head sticking out of his kennel. Before
I could even react, he had fully escaped.

Zoilo had a look of joy
on his face as he walked back and forth across the crates of the other dogs and
cats, and stopped to investigate each one.
Hisses and growls met each sniff but Zoilo wasn’t deterred. He was obviously quite proud of himself that
a silly old crate couldn’t hold such a determined canine.

pleased to be leashed, which became obvious when in 10 seconds, he chewed
through one of the slip leads and started work on the second one. Thankfully, I was able to deter him from
fully escaping again and the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful.

On Wednesday, April 29th, Rory (Leech Lake Reservation Community Services Officer) received a call regarding a litter of 7 orphan pups in S. Lake on Leech Lake Reservation. The mama of the pups had not returned and the litter of 7 orphan pups (approximately 4 weeks old) were surrendered to the Leech Lake Tribal Police.

The pups were immediately taken to Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji where they bottle fed the pups as Jenny (LLL Program Director) began making phone calls and arrangements to find placement for these pups and to arrange for transport. Jenny reached out to our partner Animal Humane Society and we are extremely grateful their foster program was ready and able to bring 7 orphan pups in and fosters ready to bottle feed the orphan pups every 3 hours! The wheels were set in motion and LLL volunteer Eileen picked up the pups from Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji and met Jenny at the half way point to the Twin Cities (Motley). The pups arrived at the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society/AHS a little after 6 pm on Wednesday, 4/29 and were immediately checked out by AHS vet techs ... weighed, de-wormed, microchipped and their foster care kits and crates prepared to send them off to their foster homes!

Thanks to a wonderful network and a caring village, these precious 7 pups will receive the necessary care ..... and when they are old enough to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated, they will be placed up for adoption through our partner Animal Humane Society.

We were put in contact with Jeanne Mock, Director of National Accounts for Kids in Need Foundation. One connection, and conversation, led to another ...

... and it wasn't long before it became apparent that there was a real need for school supplies for schools on Leech Lake Reservation. We were asked if we had a contact on Leech Lake Reservation, and would there be a way for us to get the school supplies to the schools up at Leech Lake Reservation. Leech Lake Legacy believes in collaboration, in partnership and in building bridges. Helping the children and teachers of Leech Lake Reservation was a natural extension of our belief in the importance of community. The very beginnings of Leech Lake Legacy involved helping the animals .... through our relationships and friendships with residents, tribal leaders and band members of Leech Lake Reservation, we have learned that everything we do MUST be about community. And community is about people AND animals.

We soon learned of the partnership Kids in Need Foundation had with a organization, Yoobi and their Yoobi Classroom Packs. The classroom packs contain the most fundamental tools needed for learning and creativity and each pack contains supplies for a classroom of 30.

This week, my vehicle is packed to the brim with 25 Yoobi Classroom Packs. We will get the packs up to Leech Lake Reservation and into the hands of teachers at Cass Lake Elementary and the King School. And yes, more packs will be on their way up in the not too distant future.

A heartfelt thanks to Kids in Need Foundation and to Yoobi for providing teachers and students on Leech Lake Indian Reservation with much needed school supplies.

WHAT IS YOOBI????

YOOBI tells who they are and what they do in their own words . . .

Yoobi, pronounced “you-be,” is a new colorful and vibrant school supply brand that makes learning fun while also giving back. We create and sell supplies for the school, home or office, and for every item you buy directly from us or one of our retail partners, we donate a Yoobi item to a classroom in need right here in the U.S. Our goal is to perk up the school supply aisle, and help solve a big problem along the way. Yoobi is a for-profit company with giving integrated into its core mission.

Our goal is to one day provide free school supplies to all classrooms that lack access to basic learning tools. Yoobi was founded on the belief that: (1) access to fundamental school supplies should be within reach of all kids, no matter what ZIP code they come from, (2) teachers should not have to spend money out of their own pockets in order to provide those supplies, and (3) each and every one of us can make a difference.

For every Yoobi item you purchase, one Yoobi item (based on classroom need) is contributed to a Yoobi Classroom Pack, which is donated through one of our donation partners to a classroom in need right here in the U.S. Donated items may include pencils, glue sticks, erasers, rulers, folders, crayons, colored pencils or other items. “One for you, one for me” is what kids say on the playground and at snack time. It’s how they learn to share, and play fair. Now they can make those choices as consumers, picking out some practical Yoobi goodies with you by their side.

Our founder, Ido Leffler, came up with the “Yoobi” idea after a trip down the school supply aisle with his two daughters. He noticed that the wall of products felt like it hadn’t been updated since he was in junior high. He found himself wondering; what if the school supply aisle grabbed kids interest like the toy aisle? Plus, Ido has visited dozens of public schools and found the classrooms to be either institutionally austere, or colorful wonderlands covered in kids’ art. In the wonderlands, he’d learned that many of the teachers had paid for supplies out of their own pockets: a real problem we need to solve. Ido thought, why not develop a line of cool school supplies that engage kids, while helping others?

Ido was thinking of a way to get people excited about what we were about to embark on, and kept going back to the notion of inspiring people to be whoever they want to be…he thought, You be the difference. You be great. You be awesome! You be YOU. Yoobi! What better name for a cute, nation-changing toucan? Yoobi’s goal is to inspire kids to be whomever and whatever they want to be, and give them the tools they need to do it.

We love working with our non-profit partners! We have partnered with the Kids In Need Foundation to ensure that our school supplies reach the classrooms demonstrating the greatest need. Kids In Need Foundation is in its twentieth year of providing free school supplies to 4.2 million children and 120,000 teachers annually through a network of 34 Resource Centers across the U.S.
5:00 a.m. – A screaming alarm wakes me up in an unfamiliar bed and it takes a minute for my groggy brain to remember I am in Cass Lake on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. I stumble out of bed and try to focus on making it to the bathroom without tripping over the miscellaneous shoes, bags and other items strewn along my path.

I make it into the shower without injury and as I stand under the steaming water, I think about the previous evening when I received a late-night call from Dr. Vicki. She was calling to see if I could help organize transport for a severely burned puppy from Red Lake Reservation that needed to get to Minneapolis as soon as possible. A few phone calls and emails later and transport was set. I think again to myself how lucky I am to be involved with such a passionate, dedicated network of animal lovers and send a silent prayer that the injured dog survives the trip.

I am in town with a group of Leech Lake Legacy volunteers to host a Surrender Event at the Tribal Police Headquarters in Cass Lake. Once a month, we set up at the Tribal Police garages and provide an opportunity for residents of the Reservation to surrender their animals to us. We take in animals (dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks, etc.) all day on Saturday. We are able to provide simple services to dogs and cats (de-worming) and also trim nails. And we provide dog and cat food to pet owners.
The thermometer reads 16 below zero but with the wind it feels 20 degrees colder. The van grumbles and complains but after a bit of coaxing, finally starts up. I crank the heat on full blast, pull my hat down around my ears and begin the arduous task of scraping the inch of ice from all 11 windows on the van.
Since I was coordinating the clinic, I figured it was my responsibility to make sure we had enough TP to get us through the day. I certainly didn't want a mutiny on my hands. My first stop was Teal’s, the local grocery store. I left the van running as I pulled into the lot and was thoroughly disappointed when I ran to the door and realized they didn’t open until 6:00. I jumped back in the van and attempted to keep warm until the store opened.
Flash, a gorgeous black and white cat, was surrendered to Leech Lake Legacy at our Dec. 13, 2014 Surrender Event in Cass Lake. He was a stray on Leech Lake Reservation and was being 'watched over' and cared for by a Leech Lake Reservation resident. As volunteers at our Surrender Event were caring for him they noticed Flash had a rotting odor and noticed an area on his rear end that was bleeding and looked severely infected. As Leech Lake Legacy did not have any volunteer vets with us at our December event we took Flash to get checked out at a vet in Bemidji where he was 'cleaned up' and given meds to treat the infection. The sweet boy just needed some time (and TLC) to heal. Flash spent about 6 weeks in a temporary foster home with LLL (thanks Nancy and Tom!) where he spent the holidays and made himself quite at home and got lots of love and pampering :). In the middle of January, our partner Pet Haven took Flash into their foster program. Flash is now being fostered in a home with a fellow Rez 4-legged buddy, Indy who is originally from Red Lake Reservation and adopted through All Dog Rescue.

Nancy got an update on Flash for Flash's current foster, Margaret .. we just had to share :)

"Flash continues to be such a little darling. I'm sending some photos of him, the last few are photos I took of him cuddling with my Red Lake dog, Indy, this morning. They are so adorable together! Indy never snuggles with other dogs but just adores Flash. I think it may be mutual:-)

Thank you for sending his toys! He just loves his fishing rod. I think we played with it for an hour straight today. My son thinks it's hilarious. Flash even seems to like him; he walks right up to him and rubs against him and purrs.

Thank you for all you've done for him - what a transformation!"

A big thanks to the Leech Lake resident for caring for Flash (and other stray cats on Leech Lake) and bringing him to us; to Nancy/Tom for fostering and giving Flash the time to heal; to Sandra (LLL board member who provided Flash with amazing care when he was first surrendered in Dec. 2014 and continued to be his advocate); to Pet Haven (with a special thanks to Mary Ann, Pet Haven's Cat Adoption Director); and to Margaret (Flash's current foster) ... and oh, Indy, says, 'Me too!' :)
Leech Lake Legacy/LLL kicked off 2015 with a new service for Leech Lake reservation residents - a transport spay/neuter event! LLL began hosting spay/neuter and wellness clinics on in Cass Lake on the Leech Lake Reservation beginning in March, 2012. All of our clinic have been hosted in collaboration with Kindest Cut, a mobile spay/neuter provider offering high volume, high quality spay/neuter services.

In the past we have never offered spay/neuter services in the winter months. At the end of 2014, Jenny Fitzer (LLL Program Director) asked the LLL Board if we could offer a one-day surgery clinic as she was getting many inquiries from residents about when our next spay/neuter clinic would be. She proposed that LLL would pick up the animals in Cass Lake and transport them down to the Twin Cities where they would be spayed/neutered by our partner Kindest Cut at their clinic in Golden Valley. The animals would spend Friday and Saturday night in the Twin Cities then would be transported back to their families on Sunday. LLL received a generous grant from Pause 4 Paws and the LLL Board easily and quickly voted that we would absolutely fund a one day transport spay/neuter event.

At our one day surgery clinic, we spayed/neutered, vaccinated and dewormed 29 animals (16 cats and 13 dogs). Additionally, one of the dogs, Sweetheart, had an abscessed lump of quills removed from her neck.
Many thanks to our partner Animal Humane Society for letting us use their kennels and garage space and for hosting 29 animals for 2 nights. A big thanks to LLL volunteers who provided animal care over the weekend and a special thanks to Jenny Fitzer and Heidi Hunstad for logging over 1,000 miles in 3 days to transport precious animals.

We are also grateful to Leech Lake Reservation residents for trusting with their beloved pets ... all of them got lots hugs and kisses from our volunteers.
Guest blog contributor:
Craig Berdan, LLL Board member/treasurer and volunteer extraordinaire!

“Saving cats and dogs…because they matter.”

These words may have inspired you to become involved with Leech Lake Legacy. We have a generous donor base and volunteer contingent due in no small part to big hearts and soft spots for cats and dogs.

Since our humble beginnings with transports in 2011, we’ve found more ways to help more animals. Consider how our core programs have changed since then:

• Spay/neuter clinics have grown from none to eight clinic days per year, and include transport service from remote reservation communities
• Wellness clinics have grown from none to 12 clinic days per year
• Transports now occur at least once per week, and we have monthly surrender events; animals from White Earth and Red Lake reservations and surrounding communities are being served as well

But we know that spay/neuter and wellness clinics and transports and surrender events can go only so far in improving the lives of reservation animals. While we will not stray from those core programs, we need to be open to new ways of reaching reservation animals and residents, earning and keeping reservation residents’ trust, and providing what we can to further improve the lives of reservation animal.

As communities in general struggle with issues like poverty and violence, we can see direct impact on the animals in those communities. Healing and help is needed by both people and animals, and so you’ve seen additional efforts provided for reservation residents by Leech Lake Legacy like:

• Transport and distribution of donated pet food and cat litter
• Fundraising for and distribution of dog houses and straw
• Volunteer staffing at the Leech Lake impound
• Delivery of donated clothing and school supplies

Of course, healing and help is needed far beyond Leech Lake Reservation. Look for Leech Lake Legacy to continue to reach out to the remote communities of Leech Lake Reservation and to assist at White Earth and Red Lake reservations. As we work with Native America Humane Society, we hope to make Leech Lake Legacy a model organization to be replicated on other reservations.

The work we hope to do will require substantial financial resources. Unfortunately, when people needs and animal needs compete for funding, people needs usually “win.” We need to be mindful of the people-impact of our work by asking these questions,

How can we help reservation animals in such a way as to also improve the lives of people in the reservation community?

How can we help people in the reservation community in such a way as to also improve the lives of reservation animals?

And so, after much reflection and discussion ... we are changing our tagline to words that more accurately reflect what we do and what we hope to do as we move forward into 2015 and beyond:

“Serving reservation animals and the people who love them.”

Because of our generous supporters, 2014 was an amazing year for Leech Lake Legacy:

• We transported and re-homed over 1,000 dogs and cats.
• We hosted four spay/neuter clinics on the Reservation where 363 dogs and cats were altered. We also provided wellness checks and vaccines for another 512 dogs and cats.
• We held 12 surrender events where more than 491 animals were surrendered and transferred to our partner rescues and shelters in Minnesota.
• We provided emergency medical care to countless dogs and cats needing immediate attention.
• We distributed 289 doghouses and bales of straw for outside Reservation dogs as a part of The Yukon Project. We also distributed cathouses for feral and community cats.
• We distributed more than 50,000 pounds of dog and cat food to pet owners.
• In partnership with The Native America Humane Society and other partners, we collected and distributed over 6,500 winter wear items (hats, gloves, scarves and coats) and over 1,000 school supplies for the children of Leech Lake Reservation. A special thanks to the Helen Woodward Animal Center for securing a majority of the winter wear donation.

Our goals for 2015 are even greater. We will host eight events at Leech Lake Reservation offering spay/neuter and/or wellness services. Every month, we will host a surrender event, which provide an opportunity for residents to surrender animals for which they are no longer able to care. We will collaborate with Red Lake Rosie’s Rescue to offer two spay/neuter/wellness clinics at White Earth Reservation. We will continue our weekly transports of dogs and cats from the Leech Lake Impound, and will be working on education and outreach programs in partnership with the Leech Lake Tribal College. And inevitably, there will be injured animals on the Reservation who will need immediate and often expensive medical care.

In order to continue the transports, the clinics, and provide emergency care to injured animals and shelter for outside Reservation dogs and cats, we need your support. If you would like to contribute to Leech Lake Legacy, you can make an online donation at www.leechlakelegacy.org/donate or send a donation to:
Cici's story is yet another example of how we can do so much more for the animals when we all work together.

Here is Cici's story:

From Karen of RLRR:

"Initially Red Lake Rosie's Rescue/RLRR got a call from a lady in Rice Lake, a community on
the White Earth Reservation that a female dog would need to be taken or would be shot. Our friends Bill, Teresa, and Cassie responded and brought CiCi to the RLRR shelter."

Karen then reached out to Jenny (Leech Lake Legacy, Program Director) about Cici. We suspected she was pregnant so we reached out to our amazing temp foster, Heidi who immediately agreed to take Cici until she had her puppies.

Cici had been with Heidi for a few weeks and on Saturday, 12/20 we got a call from Heidi that Cici had given birth to one puppy ...

and here is the rest of her story in Heidi's words:

"I felt like a kid waiting for Santa to come on Christmas night! I was filled with excitement waiting for Cici, my first mother, to have her babies.

Cici is just one of the many precious reservation animals who made her way into our teams helping hands and open hearts. Originally from White Earth reservation Cici ended up with Karen at Red Lake where her future began. Cici is wonderful, a gentle soul and a sweet spirit. What a great girl she is, having her around is a treat.

Saturday, December 20th, around 2:00am she woke up and I knew it was time. Shortly before 8:00am a beautiful baby girl was born. Her name would be Gabriella, Gabby. I was overwhelmed with emotion. It was just magic; that's the first birth I've ever seen! More then excited I was just in awe. Well one hour goes by, two hours go by and no more babies. Long story short with the guidance and advice of Dr Vicki (of Act V Rescue & Rehabilitation), Jean (of Carver Scott Humane Society), and Julie (of Secondhand Hounds) Cici was going to the vet. An x ray showed an empty uterus. Cici had a litter of ONE! Didn't see that one coming! However, relieved we went home to rest.

Cici is a mother in every sense of the word. She is caring, watchful, diligent. She loves that little girl, and I wonder if having just one increases her nurturing or if she is just naturally a great mother.

It is my absolute pleasure to be apart of Cici, and of course Gabby's story.

From Cici, Gabby, and myself a big thanks to everyone!

Heidi

Congrats Cici, and welcome Gabby ..... a big thanks to Heidi, an amazing network of animal welfare groups working together to help the animals.

Gabby, you are without a doubt, a special Christmas gift ....
On December 9th, Leech Lake Legacy lost a dear friend and supporter, Terri Neumann. Terri's sister Vicki has been volunteering with Leech Lake Legacy from our early days and got her sister Terri to also get involved with Leech Lake Legacy :) Terri helped in so many ways ..... She would also temp foster cats/kittens for LLL. We send our deepest condolences to Vicki and her family. We asked Vicki to share a few words about her sister ..... RIP Terri Your spirit will continue to live on through your sister Vicki and the work she does with LLL ...

"Terri has always been an animal lover and owner. The dog she leaves behind is Windsor and the cat is Cleo. Cleo came from Leech Lake Legacy. Terri helped foster some kittens from Leech Lake, as well as the feral kittens we trapped in our yard. She never did a transport, but I think I could have eventually convinced her to ride shotgun with me to Motley."
Terri's obituary was in last Sunday's paper.
One of our dedicated volunteers, Nancy O'Sullivan, is a tireless advocate for all animals. She informed us that Eddie's time had run out at the Bemidji Impound ... could we help? I asked Nancy to share Eddie's story:

"We don't know much about Eddie's past, but I told him several times we were leaving it behind him anyway and moving forward onto new and better things. Eddie was diagnosed with FIV at his vet visit in Bemidji, but Amber (a Leech Lake Legacy volunteer) was more than happy to take Eddie into her home to foster.

Eddie weighed in at 6.5 lbs when he arrived at our home. We discovered he was a huge chow-hound and loved his meals.....and he especially loved it when we laid next to him, petting him while he ate.

Eddie in temp foster with Nancy and Tom O.

I hope Eddie hangs in there. His heart and lungs and his tummy were checked out by Bemidji Animal Hospital and all were in great working order.......he was skin and bones though when we picked him up but I believe he gained a bit of weight with his foster care here for 10 days. Still, I
worry about the FIV and if he is strong enough to live with it. I think he has had a very tough life, but he obviously wants to live and become a great addition to a loving family for the rest of his days. He was cuddly and affectionate with us and followed me around when I could sneak him in a
larger room without our dogs. He was nose-to-nose with our chocolate lab once and it resulted in a 'duh!' moment, so Eddie is just a laid back kind of guy.

It didn't take long to fall in love with Eddie......his eyes melted my heart, and his sweetness
touched my soul."

Eddie will continue to need medical care and is definitely not out of the woods. Please continue to send lots of positive, healing energy his way.

A big thanks to Nancy for all you have done for Eddie .. and a big thanks also to Amber for your willingness to take a special needs cat into your home and for providing the necessary care.

Wenda was surrendered to Leech Lake Legacy at our Oct. 12-13, 2014 clinic. Unfortunately all of our partner shelters and rescues were at capacity with cats and kittens so we had nowhere for Wenda to go. Wenda ended up having to go back to the Cass Lake impound (on Leech Lake Reservation) where she spent the next month. Many thanks to our amazing volunteers up north who would visit the cats at the impound (and Wenda was one of many) .. they made sure she had the appropriate care and took time to also play and socialize them.

On Nov. 14th, Wenda came down to the cities with all of her fellow cat friends at the impound. There were also Red Lake reservation cats that were on transport ... a big surgery (spay/neuter) clinic was scheduled in partnership with the University of Minnesota SIRVS (Student Initiative for Veterinary Services) group and 26 cats were scheduled to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated by vet school students under the supervision of vets. The surgery clinic was hosted at Silver Lake Animal Hospital in Oakdale, MN. That day one of the vets volunteering was Dr. Karen Lopez. That day Dr. Karen fell in love with Wenda, an older gray cat with lots of personality!! :)

All 26 cats, after surgery, were taken to the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley for temporary lodging until we could figure out if any of our partner groups could take these 26 cats into their adoption program. We lucked out .... all 26 cats were placed with either the Animal Humane Society or Angel of Hope rescue. Wenda, ended up going to a foster home with Angel of Hope rescue.

A few days later we got an email from Dr. Karen indicating that she couldn't stop thinking about Wenda and was interested in putting an application in for Wenda. We put Dr. Karen in contact with Angel of Hope Rescue. Not long after, we learned that Wenda was officially adopted by Dr. Karen. Today, we got an email from Karen:

Hello all,
I am happy to report that Miss Wenda has settled into her new home very nicely. She is affectionate, playful, very neat, and just a little nervous. She loves to be brushed and has slept in bed with me every night since she came home on Sunday. She particularly likes playing with a little white mouse toy that a friend of mine sent to us. I am thoroughly enjoying her, completely in love with her, and she has brought the warmth back into my apartment. As I type she is lounging in her pink bed on my bed. I've attached some pictures of her. Feel free to share with others.

Love,
Karen

Congrats Miss Wenda and Karen!! We are so happy for you both :) And many thanks to all who helped care of Wenda along her journey to finding her new forever home :)
