Moe ... slowly coming out of his shell ...

Moe .. arrives at AHS on 7/13/13, absolutely terrified
Moe was surrendered at our 7/13/13 Puppy Roundup at Leech Lake Reservation. He was absolutely petrified and would only crawl on his belly. When he arrived at the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society later that evening he would not budge from his crate. We took the top part of the crate off and thought we could entice him to come out of his crate ... no such luck!! Dawn, AHS Vet tech supervisor, decided he just needed to be wheeled away and brought a cart out so that Moe could remain in his crate, feeling safe. The staff needed to get a weight on him and and instead of stressing the sweet boy out, they lifted Moe and his crate onto the scale ... he was then immediately taken to the 'Q' ward -- the quiet ward so he could have time to relax and acclimate to his new surroundings. The sweet boy is now going through AHS' Ad Prep program --- a program for shy and fearful dogs. He has apparently been capturing the hearts of AHS staff and Ad Prep volunteers.

Leech Lake Legacy volunteers were at AHS today for our dog wash/nail trim fundraiser. We had a surprise visit by Moe, who was being walked by an Ad Prep volunteer ... apparently one of many who have fallen in love with him :) He spent time in the shade getting brushed (aka 'furminated') and getting lots of pampering and attention. This sweet boy has come a LONG way in just one week .... a HUGE thanks to the love, patience, kindness of the AHS staff and volunteers.

Moe was surrendered by residents at Leech Lake Reservation who simply could not afford to keep him and care for him. He lived with young kids and was deeply loved.

It was such a treat to see Moe walking today and not cowering or dropping to the ground when approached. He welcomed the attention and the brushing and showed off his gorgeous eyes :) He will need more time in AHS' Ad Prep program, but there is no doubt in our mind, he is getting all the love, attention, patience and encouragement ... to come out of his shell!! :) In one week, we've already seen immense progress!

Moe, one week later, with an AHS volunteer
Thank you AHS for all you are doing for this gentle, kind, sweet boy :)

Update: Peaches ...

We got the following update on July 13th from Jean of Carver Scott Humane Society/CSHS. Peaches arrived from Leech Lake Reservation on the 2/23/13 transport. She was taken into CSHS's foster program and fostered by Jean when she arrived. Jean has been a life saver for Leech Lake Legacy taking in a lot of our very sick animals and helping us nurse them back to health ...

Peaches has been adopted to a wonderful couple, but could use our positive thoughts and prayers ... here is her update and story from Jean ... thank you Jean, Heidi and Phil for providing Peaches with so much love and all the care she needs to get better. You will be in our thoughts and prayers:

"Today Peaches will receive her first heartworm injection. Peaches, a young Shepherd cross, came to us earlier this year from Leech Lake Reservation. She was sick and had a broken leg. She overcame her illness rather quickly, but, was with us for several months recovering from her broken leg (no surgery was needed....just splints and rest). When she first came to us, she had the 4x (HW/Lymes/Anaplasmosis/Erlich) test done, and tested positive for Lymes. She was treated with antibiotics for the Lymes.

During her stay in our home, a couple who had adopted a dog from us several years ago contacted me and asked me to be on the lookout for another special dog for them. Their current dog, Anna, came from the Lake Traverse reservation and is a very special girl. I told Heidi and Phil that I currently had a special dog, but, she wasn't cleared for adoption yet because of her broken leg. Peaches went to visit the couple and Anna, and they all fell in love with her. When she was cleared for adoption, she was quickly adopted by Heidi and Phil. Their vet clinic did another 4x test on Peaches' first visit, and she tested positive for HW. The results were confirmed by two additional HW tests, and a treatment plan was made. I learned that it takes 6 months from the time of infection until a dog tests positive for HW. This explains the two different results. Heidi and Phil aren't able to keep Peaches quiet in their home for the required amount of time, so, I volunteered to have Peaches stay with us during her treatment. She'll be in our home until early October, but, Heidi and Phil will come to visit her often during this time. Her treatment will follow the American HW Association protocol of 3 injections.

Please send positive energy and healing thoughts to Peaches.

Thanks,
Jean"

Limbo ... the power of love and patience

Limbo at Animal Care Clinic
When Limbo first arrived at the Leech Lake Impound he was completely terrified and did not want to be handled by humans. We transferred Limbo to Animal Care Clinic in Bemidji early last week so the little guy could get vaccinated ... we were told he was very, very scared. The tech at Animal Care Clinic told us she believed he just needed some TLC and some time ...

We arranged for Limbo to hitch a ride yesterday on the Red Lake Rez transport that was coming to the cities. Jenny reached out to our temp foster extraordinaire, Jenna (who also works as an animal care lead at the Animal Humane Society). We knew Limbo needed to spend some time in her loving care and to learn that humans aren't all that bad :) Limbo arrived on transport yesterday and we started getting texts and updates on the little guy from Jenna. He was terrified when he arrived and just wanted to hide. Well ... in less than 24 hours you will witness from the following photos, the amazing transformation of Limbo, and how powerful love and some TLC can be ... Jenna, and her boyfriend Keith, are simply amazing!! And yes, many thanks to Yukon, Rue and Big Bear (Jenna's pups for showing Limbo the ropes ... sounds like Yukon showed Limbo that sleeping on the bed is much more comfortable) :)

Limbo arrives at Jenna's house
He finds a safe spot ... but apparently LOVES treats!
Jenna works her magic within a hours

Keith and Limbo ... less than 24 hours after he arrives ... this photo says it all!! :)
Thank you Jenna and Keith (and Yukon, Rue and Big Bear) .... and give Limbo and big hug and kiss from all of his fans and supporters! :)

In memory of Alex Sterling ... leaving a legacy ...

Alex Sterling - June 4, 1987 - March 4, 2010
Leech Lake Legacy received a surprise donation/grant in the amount of $2,000 from The Alex Sterling Memorial Fund of The Minneapolis Foundation yesterday .... From their website:

"We established this fund to keep Alex’s memory alive in the hearts of those who love him, to keep his name before the community where he spent most of his life, and to create something positive from his tragic death.

Alex loved animals. We will use this fund to donate money to shelters and other organizations that are trying to save and protect animals."

And to describe the awesome photo of Alex (above): "I wish I had thought to include this photo of Alex in the funeral brochure. He was 12, had just started junior high, and I told him that a friend of mine at work had said that “raising teenagers is like nailing Jell-O to a tree.” She meant Jell-O that was cooked, of course. But this time Alex thought inside the box. It took him about 30 seconds to grab a box of Jell-O, find a nail and hammer, go outside, and nail the box to one of our trees. “It’s easy, Mom,” he laughed.

His quick, intelligent, hilarious reaction was just so Alex. That’s how he was. His eyes sparkled most of the time. He was our family comedian and fun to be with. Others thought so, too, he had a wide circle of friends. Almost 200 people attended his funeral ... "

Alex, thank you for leaving your legacy through your foundation ..... know that your donation will help so many animals, and pet owners, of Leech Lake Reservation. You will forever remain in the hearts of so many, and in the hearts and spirits of many, many animals and beloved owners. Your legacy will live on and you will give voice and a second chance to many animals ...

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
